Although the folks that mostly make up the tea party movement definitely have a right-leaning perspective, their message is clearly middle ground and average America. The GOP can either treat this as an opportunity or a threat because it can go either way for them. The Tea Party can cause just as many losses as wins for Republican incumbents this fall.

That is exactly right. I think it could be argued that the Tea Party gaining ground and fielding candidates will result in wins for Democrats.
