 | | | | | | | The "unifying" force in the Middle East is religion. Shiite and Sunni may be "public" opponents, not unlike the old days of Catholic vs the rest of Christianity. But fundamentally, Shiite and Sunni are Muslim, the that trumps political divisions. Our problem is that the United States has failed to declare war against "militant" Islamists. We're stuck in the region because of oil. As long as we are willing to spend blood, money and treasure, the Islamists are quite willing let us bleed ourselves dry - as long as we don't start to win militarily on the ground, and politically in the region. Start to win, and guess how long it would take to shut the Straits of Hormuz? Ten minutes or ten seconds, are there goes the world's economy and I'm sure the Chinese and others are aware of this strategic land mine. You haven't heard of this because war is important to the big money interests not only on Wall Street, but throughout world financial centers. We really have only two choices; withdraw from the region and accept terrorism for the future, or, get serious and go after the militants perhaps by using the old Soviet method of dealing with known terrorist families. P.C. or morally correct; no, but this is the greatest of all immoralities, war, and it HAS to be ended, one way or another. |
