Forget the fact that the United States liberated Iraq, or the fact that American soldiers are sacrificing their lives in the country - it looks like Iraqi leadership wishes to cozy up to one of the United States' biggest threats.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Islamic Daawa Party announced it will enter into an alliance with the Iraqi National Coalition (INC). It appears that Iran's influence in Iraq is running high as elections for the country near. The reports that the two countries are getting more cozy come from security consultancy firm Stratfor.

“Al-Maliki’s Islamic Daawa Party is using the pretext of coalition politics to justify its decision align with INC, says Stratfor. "But there is no hiding that the development of this coalition is the result of Iranian efforts to maintain a dominant position in Iraq."

“It seems evident that Iran’s Shiite allies are involved in—if not behind—the move to sideline key Sunni leaders and their followers in the election,” reports United Press International. As a result, Iraq’s Shiite-dominated government has started banning Sunni politicians from running, claiming ties to Saddam Hussein’s Baathist regime. For whatever the reason, the move seems hardly democratic.

Will Iraq become Iran's puppet? Share your thoughts.

How come we haven't heard much about this in the news? I understand that Haiti is the top news item right now, as well as the Brown vs. Coakley Senate race; but this is a big deal too!

The "unifying" force in the Middle East is religion. Shiite and Sunni may be "public" opponents, not unlike the old days of Catholic vs the rest of Christianity. But fundamentally, Shiite and Sunni are Muslim, the that trumps political divisions. Our problem is that the United States has failed to declare war against "militant" Islamists. We're stuck in the region because of oil. As long as we are willing to spend blood, money and treasure, the Islamists are quite willing let us bleed ourselves dry - as long as we don't start to win militarily on the ground, and politically in the region. Start to win, and guess how long it would take to shut the Straits of Hormuz? Ten minutes or ten seconds, are there goes the world's economy and I'm sure the Chinese and others are aware of this strategic land mine. You haven't heard of this because war is important to the big money interests not only on Wall Street, but throughout world financial centers. We really have only two choices; withdraw from the region and accept terrorism for the future, or, get serious and go after the militants perhaps by using the old Soviet method of dealing with known terrorist families. P.C. or morally correct; no, but this is the greatest of all immoralities, war, and it HAS to be ended, one way or another.

Well really what do we expect....We provide Iran with funds and we support their government all while knowingly turning a blind eye to the corruption in its government and its ties to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Iraq is only taking our lead.

With Iran's recent announcement of reach 20% nuclear capacity, it makes this move by Iraq more frustrating. Iraq should be a solid ally and shouldn't be focussing efforts on appeasing Iran.
